Back to Church Sunday

Matthew 16:13-18

Church is not something that should be tolerated, Church is something that should be celebrated

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi… He asked his disciples who do people say the Son of man is? Matthew 16:13

Caesarea Philippi was known as the gates of hell

Jesus is not afraid of messy people

Jesus began the conversation about Himself in an environment full of messy people.

“Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.” 15 Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. 18 Now I say to you that you are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.  Matthew 16:14-18

A promise is only as good as the person making the promise

5 Then the angel spoke to the women. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come, see where his body was lying. 7 And now, go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Remember what I have told you.” Matthew 28:5-7

We can believe the promises of Jesus because of the resurrection.
