Overcomers Week #5

Overcoming Being Overwhelmed

2 Corinthians 1:8-10

  • Two words that could describe many of us today: crushed and overwhelmed

  • Courage + Clarity + Connection + Reflection = Helping me Overcome

1. Courage

We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it.  2 Corinthians 1:8

Three Reasons We Feel Crushed and Overwhelmed

a. Pride

b. Shame

c. Fear

2. Clarity

In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead. 2 Corinthians 1:9

Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”  Matthew 26:38

Being as clear as possible is essential to getting the help that we really need

In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead. 2 Corinthians 1:9

3. Connection

  • Connection is essential if we’re going to overcome being overwhelmed

  • Connection to God

  • Connection to other people

Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled.  Matthew 26:36-37

4. Reflection

And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us. 2 Corinthians 1:10

  • Only when you’re vulnerable can you be helped
